Replacing Herald 250 rear wheel bearings.
This isn't really a How To video, more of how I've been living with the bike this past year. The little Herald has been pretty good so far with nothing broken or damaged despite the use I put it through. It's got less than 6000 miles under it's wheels so far, although that's largely off road, and it's been almost unused since October last year when I lost interest in it and started riding my 1955 classic bike more. On my recent ride out from kent to Cambridgeshire to ride a few green lanes, the rear end started to feel a bit loose, so when I got home I gave the chain a tug, and the wheel bearings looked a bit loose, so I went to my local Motorcycle dealer, Fastlane Motorcycles in Tonbridg...

Miles of Green Lanes on a 5 Counties ride out.
Просмотров 97День назад
I started the ride by crossing the River Thames on the Woolwich Ferry, and headed North on the old Great North Road, which the Romans very kindly built for us, and named Ermine Street. This was a lovely day out and over 400 miles covered through 5 Counties, Kent, Essex, London, Hertfordshire, and Cambridgeshire, on my little Herald 250. My SD card ran out of memory before I finished the days ri...

GPS speedo problems
Просмотров 77Месяц назад
I bought the cheapest 52mm GPS speedo on ebay, which is usually the right thing to do. I tested it in the car and it worked very well, but the problem I have on the bike, is the vibration from the engine shakes the antenna and or the stepper motor violently, which is causing the signal to cut out and in all the time. I tried mounting the antenna on a spring, but still no joy, so I then tried to...

A lovely day today and the lightweight class raced earlier than yesterday, meaning the sand was less churned up and a lot firmer underfoot. I didn't come last in several of my runs today, and even got a second place. I'm looking forward the the Malle Festival in July and hope to have the Ariel running by then.
Waverley Abbey Remains
Просмотров 692 месяца назад
Waverley Abbey in Surrey was the very first monastery founded in Britain by the reforming Cistercian religious order. A small group of monks from France settled in this quiet spot by the River Wey in 1128, and Waverley soon became the springboard for Cistercian settlement in southern England. The impressive remains include the fine 13th century vaulted refectory or dining hall for the lay broth...
Thomas Beckett Church at Fairfield
Просмотров 1343 месяца назад
This wonderful old marsh church was built around 1162, with the Bells being cast in 1430. Legend has it that Thomas à Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, journeying across the Romney Marshes, fell into one of the marsh’s many ditches and prayed to St. Thomas for rescue. A passing farmer saved him and the Archbishop had the church built by way of gratitude. The original walls were of Plaster a...

This is a typical compressed biscuit ration similar to the Lifeboat Rations, but made for the civilian market. It's marketed through alibaba, and is perfect to carry in your car first aid kit or even to take backpacking. Orpington to Brasted byway ride on my Herald 250 Maverick.
Просмотров 1064 месяца назад
I put 6000 miles on this little bike over the past year mostly off road, and I've enjoyed it very much. The biggest drawback with a small bike like this, is riding the roads between the byways takes a lot longer than it does on my 500. Once off road it does a good enough job as a plaything, and although I've stuffed it a few times, nothings bent or broken so far, which is good because there doe...
Chinese Army Ration 24hr menu4 from 2022
Просмотров 1004 месяца назад
This isn't a very big ration for a 24hr unit, so I imagine it would be used in conjunction with a supplement of crackers and a separate brew kit. I ate the lot in one sitting and could have still eaten more, but it was full of flavour and very satisfying.

Some interesting bikes there mate. And a beautiful day for it, by the looks of it.
It was a great evening, and the sky was still bright as I headed back home through the back lanes with the heat of the day still rising from the hot roads.
@@thra5herxb12s Blinding. See you tomorrow at tea pot island
@@ricksroyalrides123 Thanks Rick. Yes it was a lovely ride and very nice to meet you both.
@@thra5herxb12s You too Mr Byway!
If you are going to dress up as a soldier of the period, particularly assuming three stripes, you should get the weapon handling right. I was trained to use sten gun as a National Serviceman 70 years ago. One of the first rules was to fit the magazine with a firm push, which is all that is needed. Banging the end after you have pushed it in and felt it click is not only totally unnecessary but also dangerous as it risks dislodging the first round which then jams the weapon so it won’t fire.
Thank you for your advice but this isn't a real Sten gun and the magazines are a very poor fit so some need a good whack to get them in while others fit as you say they should.
One of my sisters lived down Mount Pleasant on the bend just before the Wheatsheaf there's a path that trail riders used to use. My other sister who still lives in Crowborough is giving me a lift 2 weex from tomorrow to Groombridge's at Cross In Hand where I'll pick up a Classic 350 so maybe I'll have a look at riding those byways.
They spend a lot of time looking after these byways, and their hard work is very noticeable in the great condition of them. You might be interested in a local fb group for Enfield owners. Royal Enfield owners Kent and South East UK

Good. I told a mate I was now putting e10 in my 2021 Kawasaki and he said I really shouldn’t. O ring damage would happen. If e10 was damaging newer o rings, it’d be visible by now on this test.
There's a lot of misinformation regarding E10, and even if it did contain the full 10%, it would still be very dilute. Of course there are those that will say it's continuous wetting and drying that causes the rubber to perish, but most O rings have been made from Viton for many years, which is highly resistant to ethanol. My test was not truly scientific, but it did show that nothing bad happened.
Mine won’t shoot out the box
The carb parts were submerged, the problems with fuel in carbs is that it evaporates and that is when the damage happens as the water is left on the brass and copper parts
I didnt find that in any of my other tests, but I would like to see how you tested your samples to see if I can get any of mine to corrode.

Great video Dean, recovering after a fall on the pilgrims way a few weeks back, ironically my byway permit was deluvered the next day
Best wishes for a speedy recovery, The trails are getting drier every day now, so maybe I'll see you out there. If you get to the Ramblers Rest bike nights on Wednesday evenings come over and say hello 👍
Brilliat content! I have 1954 Red Hunter and it starterd smoking heavily. What could be reason for that? Piston and rings are ok. Could it be oil pump gasket or something else? Greetings from Finland.
Hello. It's possible you have a dirty oil pump return that might be slowing down the scavenge back to the tank. Any excess oil in the engine will continue to fly around and can get past the rings. Clean out the pump and the gauze strainer in the sump plate to make sure they are clean, and also make sure the oil pipe in the sump plate is free from sludge as this can reduce its diameter over time and also reduce the return rate. It is also possible for oil to enter the inlet valve guide and into the cylinder if your guides are badly worn. Start with the easiest thing first 👍
Mathador fail??
was you and your mrs at wateringbury bike night last night? was she giving out prizes?
We were there last night. John the owner was giving he prizes out, but my mrs is the short blond one.
@thra5herxb12s an acquaintance of mine won a trophy 🏆 😁
Thanks for the video and tuition Dean. I dont recall seeing you use a gasket when joining the crankcases. Did you? Or have you used gasket sealer?
There is no gasket for the cases. It has a spigot to locate them in line and just a thin smear of ultra grey sealant. Before the sealant has set, temporarily fit the cylinder and tighten it to align the top face, and then the 3 tie bolts can be fully tightened.
@@thra5herxb12s thanks for the response, appreciated.

The town is now just high-priced flats and unaffordable housing. Quite depressing.
Lovely city, my home birth place.
I have had my experience with this horrible road, Well, it might be hard taking a motorbike up there, but how about a car?! This incident happened probably due to a cheap satnav sending us up this TRACK! we got about halfway and our car Front wheels lifted off the ground, this cause the car to fall backwards quite quickly, after that happened, we had to reverse the whole way back down! While we were reversing down, some people were walking up the track, and told us that it was blocked off at the top.. So even if we did keep going, it was blocked off.. There was a closed road sign at the bottom of the road, but it seem to have fallen over, so we decided to ignore it.! The car is going to its MOT check soon... Hopefully there's nothing wrong with it!! Horrible experiences with this road!!! P.S. - don't buy cheap satnav's I also found a numberplate on the side of the track.. it came off a blue Volkswagen I think, I wonder what happened?
The sat navs only take you to the end of Lower Warren Road as far as the last house, where the tarmac suddenly ends and the mud track begins. I'm surprised you got so far before you noticed it wasn't a proper road.
@@thra5herxb12s the satnav never told us to stop going, it thought the dirt track was a road
Well done mate, but stuff that sand! 😀
Thanks that was the first time for me and what a blast. but the sand is as bad as it looks. The front wheel trying to go sideways is terrifying at first, but as soon as you get up to speed it all straightens up. The trick is to get up to speed as quickly as possible, I did a lot better on my second day 😁
@@thra5herxb12s I need to practice sand a lot more, just don't have enough of it nearby
I'm building a Ariel to but I'm confused choosing the crankshaft rollers
There are 2 different types of bearing, a tapered pin with crowded rollers fitted to all 350s and 600 sidevalves. The 500 hunter models with polished steel flywheels take a parallel pin with caged rollers.
What's the crankshaft roller size
The standard sizes are 1/4 x 1/4, but you need to measure your pin to see what oversize you need. It's easier to just get a complete big end assembly.
Wow men thank you I don't see your comment before but what I mean was de roller or the bearing on de sides of the crank
Looks like you had a great time Dean, hope you get the Ariel fixed up quickly. Thanks for showing us. Cheers Paul
Thanks. I have the Malle Festival in July so I need to get a new big end and the bike run in again.

Yes you can always tell where the idiots with 4x4s have been destroying the trails. They do this deliberately so they can get stuck and play with their winches. Because of this behaviour, they're banned from many trails.

Ive got many of these and IMO the best by miles are the Zundapps; KS750 as a combo, KS600 for power and speed K800 for sound. Also DKW NZ350 is light, and nippy. These ones are easy to work on, ride like modern bikes and dont have quirks like foot clutches.

Hi Dean, I was thinking about using a dc-dc buck converter for charging the 12 volt battery from 6volt Dynamo. Is such a conversion possible?
I'm not sure if one is available that would handle the higher current. I now use a DVR 2 solid state reg on my other bike and just set it to 12 volts. This means I can now draw 120w from my standard dynamo, which is normally 60w at 6 volts. I've been using it for a couple of years now with no issues at all and coupled with LED bulbs it's never going to get overloaded. I have a video on here ruclips.net/video/am6JpTEJK8E/видео.html
@@thra5herxb12s I have watched your video on DVR2, I have the DVR2 but not yet fitted. How does DVR2 perform on 12 volts? what speed you have to ride to effectively charge the battery? I heard that you will have to ride at higher speed than standard 6volts settings.
